DeKalb Super District 7 Swears-In Newcomer Lorraine Cochran-Johnson
Celebration Featuring Judge Glenda Hatchett and Judge Penny Brown Reynolds Announced
DEKALB COUNTY, GA – December 17, 2018. During a private ceremony On December 11th, DeKalb County’s newly elected Super District 7 Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson was sworn in by Judge Badelia Hargrove. Cochran-Johnson became the democratic nominee after a highly contested campaign run-off for the Super District 7 seat, in which she ultimately carried 67.4% of the vote against the Incumbent to represent one of Georgia’s largest districts with 350,000 constituents.
Seen as a part of a new regime by many voters, Cochran-Johnson’s election was a long-shot according to political pundits, but a grass roots approach to her campaign resulted in a decisive win. According to Darryll Thomas, “I’ve watched DeKalb politics for decades and I’ve never seen a political newcomer campaign as aggressively as Lorraine Johnson. She was highly visible and by the end of the campaign people felt they knew the lady with the big glasses and the bus with her photo. People connected with her because she held her own signs and people respected that. She is a part of the new face of women in politics.”
As the Commissioner, Cochran-Johnson plans to aggressively address economic development, public safety, code enforcement, and several pieces of legislation she believes will have an inalienable impact on DeKalb and its residents. “As a part of the community, I understand the challenges we face and how people can become disillusioned when they don’t see meaningful change. I want to work across the aisle to serve all people. At the end of the day we face human – not partisan issues,” said Cochran-Johnson. As a part of Cochran-Johnson’s ongoing strategy to build relationships, the newly sworn-in Commissioner has extended an invitation to all elected officials statewide to attend her public Oath of Office ceremony.
During the public ceremony, nationally syndicated Judge Glenda Hatchett will administer the Oath of Office while Judge Penny Brown Reynolds will deliver the keynote. “I am honored to have amazing mentors, who have incredible faith-filled testimonies of success that inspire and motivate. I am sure everyone in attendance will leave committed to working together to improve their communities and personal outcomes,” said Cochran-Johnson. Confirmed guests include CEO Michael Thurmond, Georgia Secretary of State Robyn A. Crittenden, Georgia State Representative Billy Mitchell, and a host of Georgia Commissioners and community members.
Although non-traditional, in addition to Cochran-Johnson’s swearing-in her newly appointed Chief of Staff, G. Leah Davis, Ph.D., and Constituent Liaison Jonathan “J.P.” Phillips will be administered an Oath of Office. “I feel it is important all key members of my team are administered an oath, because we are each assuming an important role. I have selected people of whom DeKalb can be proud. We’re new to political office, but all highly intelligent,” said Cochran-Johnson.
The Oath of Office Ceremony is planned for Jan. 4, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at the Porter Sanford Performing Arts Center, 3181 Rainbow Drive, Decatur.
