Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson Announces Super District 7 Re-Election Intent
Qualifies for primary to continue progress started during first term affirms commitment to progressively move DeKalb forward.

DECATUR, GA. – On March 7th, 2022, Lorraine Cochran-Johnson qualified for re-election to serve as Super District 7 Commissioner of DeKalb County, Georgia. As Super District 7 Commissioner Cochran-Johnson serves the southern most tip of Dunwoody, Doraville, Tucker, Unincorporated Decatur, Pine Lake, Stone Mountain, Stonecrest, Lithonia, and portions of Ellenwood.

“As a Commissioner, I have taken actions consistent with the values of the people of DeKalb. I have brought transformative ideas, unprecedented communication strategies, and a level of professionalism and personal service that is second-to-none. I see clearly what DeKalb can be and I look forward to my continued seat at the table as we face critical decisions on rail, economic development, and public safety,” said Cochran-Johnson.

Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson has held numerous Town Halls, community events, drafted legislation and taken a stand against the increase of weight and size of big trucks on highways, mandatory uniform police hiring and transparency and mandatory and structured VSS surveillance at gas and service stations and high-risk businesses. Additional accomplishments include:

  • Presented Resolution that led to the 2019 Moratorium halting the issuance of building permits for box stores, i.e., Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and Family Dollar as the impact of their presence is reviewed to determine their impact on communities and food desserts.
  • Visionary behind 50-acre $2.3 million EMBARC Youth Farm and community garden featuring state-of-the art green house, bee farm, chicken coop, rock climbing, zip lining, kayaking, 64 raised garden beds, hydroponic station, edible environments, orchards, trails, Saturday farmers market, swimming pool, and country store selling freshly harvested products including eggs, honey, pickled okra, jams, jellies, and fresh produce.
  • Funded DeKalb County Convention Center study engaging stakeholders, event planners, and top destination strategist to identify location, design and strategy to develop a world-class facility with the ability to generate revenue and stimulate economic development with recommendations with presentation to be released April 2022.
  • Developed DeKalb County Small Business Summit attracting hundreds of business owners and entrepreneurs annually by providing valuable knowledge of county resources, capital and best practices resulting in the creation and growth of businesses.
  • Allocated $2.2 million in District 7 ARP and CARES Act funds for rent, mortgage, utility and food assistance, while supporting CEO Thurmond in the allocation of over $120 million in front-line pay, business stabilization funds and COVID related relief funds.
  • Provided $250,000 in gap funding to revive the DeKalb Regional Land Bank to take possession of abated and tax delinquent properties to transform them into productive use as affordable housing generating tax revenue.
  • Established HOPE at Stonecrest to provide credit repair, financial dignity training, and home ownership workshops resulting in over $7 million in down-payment assistance to DeKalb County residents.
  • Materialized over $20 million in savings to the people of DeKalb as Chair of Public Works and Infrastructure through mandatory audits of contracts in excess of $3 million.

To kick-off her 2022 campaign Commissioner Cochran-Johnson will hold a meet-and-greet and fundraiser on Thursday, March 17th from 6:00PM to 7:30PM at Stone Ridge Event Center. Guests will enjoy the sounds of critically acclaimed violinist Joy Black and registration and proof of vaccination is required. “I am happy to continue the work I have begun, and I look forward to the support of the people of DeKalb.
