Residents should watch for road construction signs in early March as the city begins a $3 million repaving project. Sixty-one streets will be repaved in total.

It’s an expense the city budgets for each year. Funding for the roadwork comes from a myriad of sources including Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), the city’s capital fund and Georgia Department of Transportation grants.

At the Feb. 15 meeting, Tucker City Council approved a contract for $3 million with Allied Paving for repaving streets and $120,000 with BM&K to oversee the project.

BM&K will be “another set of boots on the ground,” tracking and monitoring the resurfacing, Tucker Superintendent Sam Durrance said.

Repaving this year will include streets in subdivisions Weston in Northlake and Ivey Oaks in Smoke Rise.

Four streets in Weston will be repaved using a forfeited bond. The developer “went bust” according to Durrance. Tucker plans to use the bond funds to pay for the repaving of Weston Lane, Stockton Drive, Sheridan Street and Lexington Road. Weston was developed by SR Homes.

In Ivey Oaks, five streets will get full depth reclamation, a more sustainable process for reprocessing and recycling asphalt. The city is paying Blount Construction in the amount of $547,492 from SPLOST and capital funds for work on Ivey Oaks Place, Old Ivey Walk, Ivey Creek Way, Grain Meadow Lane and Ivey Springs Trail.

Two-way traffic will be maintained at all times during repaving, the city said.

“In the next couple of months, we will have a total of $9 million in capital projects under contract,” City Engineer Ken Hildebrandt said.

The projects:

– Tucker is investing in the installation seating at seven Marta bus stops along Lawrenceville Highway and E. Ponce de Leon Avenue

– Sidewalks are nearly finished on Tucker Industrial at Church Street, and the sidewalk projects on Brockett and Montreal will start before the end of February.

– Starting in March is the $2 million Chamblee Tucker Road diet.

– Bids are out now for intersection improvements, a trail project on Hugh Howell Road to connect Smoke Rise Elementary School east to Marthasville Court.

– Lastly, work is planned to fill in sidewalk gaps on Cooledge Road.
