It appears the city of Clarkston is on its way to having its first elected Black female mayor after two former councilmembers qualified for the position this week.
Former councilmembers Yterenickia “YT” Bell and Beverly H. Burks will be competing to fill the remaining term of Ted Terry, who resigned in March to run for DeKalb County District 6 commissioner, which he was elected to in the Aug. 11 runoff.
Terry’s term as mayor was slated to end Dec. 31, 2021.
Bell, a licensed social worker and a director of a pilot government leadership program, was elected to the city council in 2017.
Burks, community engagement director for the Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority, was elected to the council in 2015 and resigned to run against Terry for mayor in 2017.
Bell or Burks would be the first elected Black person to mayor of Clarkson, a city whose population comprises of more than 58 percent Black and nearly 22 percent Asian.
The special election for mayor will be held Nov. 3.
Vice Mayor Ewet Eyasu is currently acting mayor.
