More than two dozen people were displaced overnight after fires at DeKalb County apartment and condominium complexes.
Red Cross disaster volunteers assisted 17 people at the Georgetown of Atlanta condos in the 3100 block of Colonial Way and nine people at the Chatsworth Apartments in the 4700 block of North Hill Parkway.
“Along with emotional support, volunteers provided emergency resources to help those affected with temporary lodging, food, clothing and personal care items,” Red Cross spokeswoman Sherry Nicholson said Monday in a statement. “Caseworkers will continue to work with the families in the week ahead to help them get back on their feet.”
While the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department has not released details about the condo blaze, the agency said crews were sent to Chatsworth about 3 a.m. Monday. Firefighters at the scene saw smoke and flames coming from a screened porch on the first floor of a building, officials said in Facebook posts.
Chamblee police officers were already working to evacuate residents from the apartment building, according to authorities.
Fire crews worked to extinguish the blaze before it crept through the second and third floor and into the attic. No injuries were reported in the incident, the agency said.
DeKalb firefighters also responded to a blaze at Mina’s Kitchen at a strip mall in the 5400 block of Memorial Drive. When crews arrived at the restaurant Sunday, they saw light smoke coming from the building, DeKalb fire rescue said in a statement.
First responders went inside the restaurant and found a small fire in the back of the building, the agency said. Firefighters were able to quickly bring the blaze under control, officials said.
The causes of the incidents are under investigation.
