November 13, 2020 Stonecrest: DeKalb County officials joined with the City of Stonecrest officials for a walkthrough Friday, Nov. 13, 2020 of the vote counting facility at the former Sam’s Club in Stonecrest, where it plans to start its part of the recount at 7 a.m. Saturday. Officials said the facility which was used as an early voting site for the election provides more space and allows for better social distancing than would be possible at the county’s elections office off Memorial Drive. Joe Biden led Donald Trump by 14,000 votes as of Friday morning. The cost of Georgia recount six-day recount isn’t known, but initial estimates from DeKalb County indicate it might be pricey. DeKalb officials said Friday the recount will cost about $180,000, including $147,000 in pay, $20,000 for food and beverages, and $12,000 for personal protective equipment and other coronavirus-related precautions. DeKalb County recorded nearly 172,000 in-person votes during the early voting period for the Jan. 5 runoff elections.
That’s only about 23,000 in-person votes shy of the general election’s early voting total — both of which show record-setting turnout.
From Monday, Dec. 14 through Thursday, Dec. 31, DeKalb officials recorded 268,737 cast ballots, including both in-person votes and returned absentee ballots. That’s roughly 40,000 total votes shy of the Nov. 3 general election, which broke nearly every early voting record for DeKalb.
DeKalb County elections director Erica Hamilton said the high turnout has been “kind of historic” for runoff elections. The three races on the ballot include a contentious double Senate runoff, which has dominated national headlines and local TV airwaves, along with a runoff for a public service commission seat.
According to county data, 96,852 cast absentee ballots were received by the end of 2020. Roughly 30,000 absentee ballots requested in DeKalb had yet to be returned. They must be received by 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Election day will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, and registered DeKalb voters must vote at their assigned precinct. A full list of poll locations is available on DeKalb’s website, and voters can learn their precinct by logging in on the Georgia Secretary of State’s website.
