ATLANTA — Saturday marked the single deadliest day in Georgia since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

The Georgia Department of Health reported 179 new deaths from the coronavirus in a single 24-hour period.

Health officials also reported 3,285 new cases Saturday.

At least 13,324 people have died of COVID-19 in Georgia since the first cases were reported in the state last March. Another 1,766 people are likely to have died from the virus, the Department of Health reported.

The five deadliest days of the pandemic in Georgia have all been in the last two weeks. They are:

  • Feb. 5 — 179
  • Jan. 19 — 167
  • Feb. 2 — 162
  • Jan. 22 — 160
  • Jan. 30 — 158

Doctors warned of a potential surge of infections and deaths after the Christmas holidays, although new cases seem to be on a downturn this week.
